Rough cut of Trailer
We have made a rough cut of our soap opera trailer which we will be showing to friends and family to try and get feed back from the people who we would be aiming our soap opera at. For this, I will be trying to set up somwhere online for people to leave their comments and suggestions. We have uploaded the trailer to www.youtube.com to try and get it seen by the largest amount of people we can.

Virgin Airline Advert Analysis
Because of this, we decided that the first shot in our soap trailer would be a close up of our main character Helen walking down the road in bright red heels, replicating the start of the advert. Another way in which we drew inspiration from the advert is how we plan on including shots of people going about their every day lives and stopping and staring at Helen as she walks past; in the Virgin Airline advert, men in particular stop everything they are doing in order to watch the women pass them. Our character Helen is intended to be a sexually desirable figure and so by having other members of the cast watching her, it connotes the possible storylines that will arise from her appearence. We will also include women watching her to show how the women of the soap opera react to her.
Research into Viewing Figures
These are the viewing figures for ITV for the week 22nd - 28th February. The top three spots are taken by reality television programs, with "The X Factor" being 1st and 2nd and "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here" in 3rd place. The highest number of viewers was 14.42million for "The X Factor" on Sunday. "Coronation Street" gained 10.14million viewers on Monday, which was its highest ratings for the week. "Eastender's" on BB1 did have more viewers but they are roughly around the same numbers. "Emmerdale" was ITVs lowest viewed soap opera of the week, with it's biggest number of viewers being 8.14million, and its lowest being 7.47million.
Channel 5 had the lowest viewer figures out of all of the television channels I researched into, with "Neighbours" only drawing in 1.73million viewers on its best day and at worst "Home and Away" with only 1.01million viewers. Soap Operas gained more viewers than the television drama's did on Channel 5.

Final Cast
- Helen - Jasmine Lee
- Deano - Tamer Saleh
- Courtney - Hannah Cullen
- Stephanie - Stephanie Hadlow
- Richard - Nicholas Crouch
- JJ - Tom Le Gresly
- Aaron - Lewis Spaul
The people we lost were;
- Nicholas Crouch - Had other subjects to study for
- Tom Le Gresly - Had other engagements
- Jennifer Pike - Unable to film at the same time due to prior arrangements with work and school
- Lewis Spaul - Illness
We filled Jennifer roles with Jo Peplow-Revell as she is of the same slim build with dark hair and with the innocent look we imagined Danielle to have.
Myself and Jo Peplow-Revell filled the roles of JJ and Aaron with Lewis Montague and Tim Bousfield. We also had another male space so as we wanted to always have a back-up incase we lost another actor so we were able to do this with James Hancock and James Garrod.
In our last filming session, we had to change Tamer Saleh with our original actor for Aaron, Lewis Spaul. This was so we could get everyone together, due to timetables, and finish our filming so we could move on to other pieces of work and spend no more time planning and organising other days.
Here are the pictures of our final cast:
Helen - Jasmine Lee
This is Jasmine. The middle and end picture was the costume we had for her. We have the red shoes, which are connotations of lust and romance and also the red lipstick to back it up. She is wearing a black dress, which connotes secrets and also danger which would lead to more interesting storylines from her character.
Deano - Lewis Spaul
We had to make the decision to swap Tamer with Lewis, as again, timetables clashed and this was the only day we could get our final cast together. We originally wanted Deano to be dressed in tracksuit bottoms and a white polo shirt, but with our time being limit and our decision to change actors quick, there was no costume for him. Although, as the focus isn't on his costume, the clothes he is dressed in still work well. His black coat follows the same connotations of secrecy as his Mother's black dress, and his curly hair connotes his messy personality which we can link to his behaviour in Helen Howe.
Danielle - Jo Peplow-Revell
Danielle's costume is tracksuit bottoms connoting her lack of money for the branded clothes that the other characters wear, but also following the "chav" stereotype. The heart on her t-shirt connotes her flirtatious manner and this can allude to the reason she falls pregnant, and as the heart is surrounded by black, it connotes the mischief she intends to cause with the males in Helen Howe.
Courtney - Hannah Cullen
Courtney is in fashionable clothing and this denotes how she fits in within Helen Howe. She is wearing clothes that are long and warm and this shows the visual contrast between her and her Mother, Helen. The colour green on her jumper connotes how she feels envy towards Danielle, not that she is pregnant, just because of the attention she recieves and her bubbly personality.Richard's costume is predominantly black, and this is to connote his hidden personality and the secrecy to his character. He is wearing a cardigan and skinny jeans which are the more commonly known clothes for a male to wear. The purple shirt he is wearing connotes the love Stephanie, his wife, feels for him and how the secrecy to his personality covers it up to the outside world.
JJ, Paul, Nathan and Aaron - Lewis Montague, James Garrod, James Hancock and Tim Bousfield
These are our four 'lads'. The first 3 are all dressed in jeans, jumpers and trainers. These denote style and fashion. They are all in similar costume connoting how they are all typical characters and all of the same personality. The colours for the lads are grey mainly, for the jumpers, and this connotes no real spark of personality. The use of the black for these connote the secrecy within them, especially in Aaron who is entirely in black and this connotes secrecy which would be unravelled through other episodes. Aaron is seen as the "tag along" and this is why is costume differs to the others, to create the illusion he hasn't quite achieved the "cool" look JJ and the others have achieved.

Filming Day 3 22/11/10
Overall this day has been successful as we managed to get all of the necessary cast to Gt Leigh's despite the actor issue and also we filmed a lot of the trailer in detail to prevent mistakes and little errors. We now only have 3 shots left to film which we have agreed to film on a date we have set.

Final Costume
Helen
We could not find anyone who owned a red dress that would fit Jasmine therefore we thought of other relevant colours. A black dress was our second choice, black has connotations to mystery and secrecy which complies with Helen's character as in the trailer the audience do not learn anything about her and have to wait and watch the soap to find out. Jasmine made the dress so it fit well and it was quite short also, which is what we were aiming for to comply with the male gaze theory. However, we didn't want to make the dress too revealing as Jasmine may have felt uncomfortable and we had to take into consideration the weather which would have made her freezing.
The red shoes were the most important element of Helen's costume, we could not find a pair of red shoes in Helen's size to borrow so we bought the shoes from Newlook. We only bought these because they were the main element of costume in our trailer.
We originally wanted JJ and Aaron to wear polo shirts with colours that reflected their personalities. However, we changed this idea as we wanted the boys to look as realistic and believable as possible so instead we told the 4 actors a colour scheme of black, grey, brown and denim, and we told them that we wanted them to wear clothes that thought were appropriate to a 'jack the lad' stereotype. This worked well as they wore clothes that are relevant to them and therefore this would give the best picture of verisimilitude.

Today in our meetings we discussed and finalised our costume ideas. We tried to do this in accordance with the verilasimilatude used in soap operas so that the costumes represent the type of characters we have. Magazine and Poster Shot list
This shot list is for the images that we took. I put all these together into one shot list as the pictures are used for both magazine and the poster, therefore there were no decisions make to take different pictures for each element.

First draft magazine
More Justifications:
The Magazine will be called Whodunnit?! and will have its own logo and masthead, the magazine usually accomodates all different soaps however as Helen Howe is a new soap the magazine will have a special Helen Howe edition where the cover is just for Helen Howe storylines and characters. The magazine will have one main image and one main coverline and this will be on the left hand side, the reason for the main cover line being on the left hand side will be because when shops stock magazines they are on the shelf so only the left side is seen. So the left side of the magazine needs to be bold and not too over crowded. We have taken this into consideration as the main cover line will say 'Who's the daddy?' in bold sans serif pink. The pink connotes femeniity and would therefore attract females howver because it says daddy it would attract males as well as they are being related to. Also san serif block letters will be used as that is the common type of text used for headlines.
The images of men will attract females as they will be attractive on the other hand the images of males will attract men also as they may be able to relate to the stereotype displayed in the image. The main image of Danielle biting her lip could connote sexuality and vulnerability this would attract men as she will look attractive and also as part of Laura Mulvey's the male gaze theory as Danielle is simply an object which the storyline is based around and the men are the ones who make the storyline interesting as they could be the father.
The images and coverlines on the magazine cover could also be related to Propp's theory of typical characters in the 1920s. For example we have used the 'villian' as the Richard has clearly caused trouble in Stephanie's 'Paradise' also he looks sleazy and suspicious in his image making him look villianous. Stephanie as the ' princess' as she is threatened by the villian as she has to put up with his sleazy ignorant ways. In addition Dannielle could be seen as a 'false hero' as she appears vulnerable and innocent however she is the character who started all the issues by sleeping with lots of different men.
More Auditions
These are the people who we auditioned that we decided not to use for our characters. As we had already decided who we definitely wanted for our piece.
The auditions and audition poster
We organised a date and time for out auditions and got the auditionees into their pairs. We gave them time to run through the script with their partners first so that could relax more and concentrate more on the acting rather than reading the script. We then filmed each audition and told the actors we would let them know if they got the part as soon as possible.
After filming the auditions we edited the film as a group and each did a voice-over explaining who the auditionees are and what part they are auditioning for. We did a voice-over rather than using text to make it more digitally advanced.
This is our audition poster.

Final Props
We wanted it green to connote the envy the female getting out of the car feels towards Helen. We decided to not use the props we were intending to use because of the complexity of getting the specific objects we required and also with problems with our casting, we didn't have enough members to play lots of different people.
When looking at trailers, the set is very minimalistic. For example, the trailer for the return of Eastender's Kat and Alfie is minimalist and doesn't include many props and relies heavily on the set.
All we can see of the set is the pub, which is the focus of Eastenders and features in a lot of trailers.

Props
This is our props list currently. It will be developed if we consider to use anything else that may be of value. This is helping us to arrange what props we need to find/buy with a budget if needed. Following the preparation of filming, I will compose another list of the props we do use and why they are relevent, or not, to our trailer.

Lighting in Soap Operas
In a soap opera, a "three point lighting" set up is made use of as a cheap but efficent way of lighting the set. The reason this is cheap to do is because the whole set is lit up and lights arent specifically changed for each shot, meaning fewer takes are needed. This means that less time is spent filming because the acors can move freely without havung to adjust lights and therefore less money is spent. In a film, this type of lighting set up wouldn't be used because it can look a far better quality and more natural by training specific lights on people, and films have a much larger budget.

This is an example of a soap opera set, where it is clear that the lights are fixed and do not move to track actors.

Final Location
When location scouting we had to visualise how our trailer would be displayed and where we envisioned it to be set. We decided we would like to set it in the suburbs of a town in a modern village. We have chose a modern village because our target audience is Category D audience members and we feel that our audience members should be able to relate with our characters in a realistic setting. We would also like our characters to all be associated with each other as residents of villages often are.
A very generic convention of soap operas, is the local pub that residents all socialise in. We have decided to use a pub as this establishes to the audience the iconic convention that most soaps tend to share. We would like the pub to be the place where characters confide in each other, arguments happen and the whole village congregates. This is very typical of other soap operas, for example: The Queen Vic in Eastenders has seen many fights, wedding receptions and is always packed with locals.
A post office relates to our audience because it adds a sense of realism to our soap opera which is what we are aiming to achieve.
A village hall could be a possible place for the residents to gather together, this could be teenagers hanging around outside or it could be where the older residents take dance classes. This would be a good setting to use as it adds realism and our audience can relate more with going to a village hall than they could if we set our soap opera around posh restaurants and 5 star hotels.
We would like to film our soap opera trailer in a cul de sac, this is because all the residents are neighbours and will all be familiar with eachother. We aim to create storylines which involve multiple characters and their relations with eachother.
The reason we have chosen these locations is because they are all in one area, meaning that all the buildings look similiar. This will aid us during editing because when putting all the shots together it will look more consistant than if we had filmed in many different locations. In all soaps, the houses of the central characters tend to be fairly close together which is also fitting for this area, because the houses look onto each other. The fact that we all live in Great Leighs means that we don't need to gain permission to film outside houses because we can use our own.

Location scouting
Public footpath- could be used for tracking shot, but it will be difficult to get good lighting when filming here.
