Rough cut of Trailer

We have made a rough cut of our soap opera trailer which we will be showing to friends and family to try and get feed back from the people who we would be aiming our soap opera at. For this, I will be trying to set up somwhere online for people to leave their comments and suggestions. We have uploaded the trailer to www.youtube.com to try and get it seen by the largest amount of people we can.

Virgin Airline Advert Analysis

When putting together ideas and storyboard for our soap opera trailer, one of the main existing products that inspired us was the Virgin Airline 25 Year Anniversary advert. The way that the air stewardesses are portrayed is very glamourous, with them wearing red suits and heeled shoes, with red connoting lust, passion, love and sexuality.

Because of this, we decided that the first shot in our soap trailer would be a close up of our main character Helen walking down the road in bright red heels, replicating the start of the advert. Another way in which we drew inspiration from the advert is how we plan on including shots of people going about their every day lives and stopping and staring at Helen as she walks past; in the Virgin Airline advert, men in particular stop everything they are doing in order to watch the women pass them. Our character Helen is intended to be a sexually desirable figure and so by having other members of the cast watching her, it connotes the possible storylines that will arise from her appearence. We will also include women watching her to show how the women of the soap opera react to her.

Research into Viewing Figures

I have been looking into the viewing figures of Soap Operas for the week 22nd November - 28th November and how the soaps compare to reality television shows or dramas. I focussed on BB1, ITV and Channel 5, who are the main British television channels who air soap operas.
I found that during this week, no Soap Opera was the most viewed program on any channel. On BB1 for example, Strictly Come Dancing got the top spot, which perhaps indicates that the general public is slowly moving away from soap operas. However, every Eastenders episode was ranked highly for the week, which rather dispells that idea. "Strictly Come Dancing" took the two top spots for the BBCs viewing figures with 12.43million viewers on Saturday and 11.94million on the Sunday. Eastender's highest figures for the week was 10.6million on the Monday. Eastender's ranked far higher than the television Drama's aired on the BBC such as Holby City and Casualty who gained 5.88million and 5.64million respectively.

These are the viewing figures for ITV for the week 22nd - 28th February. The top three spots are taken by reality television programs, with "The X Factor" being 1st and 2nd and "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here" in 3rd place. The highest number of viewers was 14.42million for "The X Factor" on Sunday. "Coronation Street" gained 10.14million viewers on Monday, which was its highest ratings for the week. "Eastender's" on BB1 did have more viewers but they are roughly around the same numbers. "Emmerdale" was ITVs lowest viewed soap opera of the week, with it's biggest number of viewers being 8.14million, and its lowest being 7.47million.

Channel 5 had the lowest viewer figures out of all of the television channels I researched into, with "Neighbours" only drawing in 1.73million viewers on its best day and at worst "Home and Away" with only 1.01million viewers. Soap Operas gained more viewers than the television drama's did on Channel 5.

Filming day 4 - 26th November

This was our final day of filming, where we managed to get our whole cast together. We re-filmed the scene with the four boys outside the pub to ensure that we had the perfect shot, and we filmed the very last scene where the entire cast group around Helen and her children. Due to our change in casting we also had to re-film the reveal of the children and of Danielle's pregnancy. This was a very successful day because we finished all of the filming we required for our trailer, and so can now start to edit and put together our soap opera trailer.

Organising our Actors

These are the direction to Great Leighs. As the picture isn't clear it says:

  • Left out of school
  • 2nd exit on the roundabout past the Hospital
  • Carry on past Lt Waltham and to Essex Regiment Way roundabout and take the 2nd exit towards Great and Little Leighs
  • At the next roundabout, take the 3rd exit into Great Leighs
  • Brickbarns is the first road on your left and St Annes is on your right.

This is a drawn map from school to the location. The blue is the route they need to take.

Again, the picture isn't clear so here is what it says:

"Hi guys.
For the next two weeks we have media off timetable to film you lot for our piece! Sooo if you could all let me/any of us know what times you are available during the day and after schools too. If there's a time max as well for after school just pop that down too :)

If you could get back to this message asap too that would be great. Thanks so much :)
Xxx"

Final Cast

These are the people who we originally auditioned and decided to fill our roles:
  • Helen - Jasmine Lee
  • Deano - Tamer Saleh
  • Courtney - Hannah Cullen
  • Stephanie - Stephanie Hadlow
  • Richard - Nicholas Crouch
  • JJ - Tom Le Gresly
  • Aaron - Lewis Spaul

The people we lost were;

  • Nicholas Crouch - Had other subjects to study for
  • Tom Le Gresly - Had other engagements
  • Jennifer Pike - Unable to film at the same time due to prior arrangements with work and school
  • Lewis Spaul - Illness

We filled Jennifer roles with Jo Peplow-Revell as she is of the same slim build with dark hair and with the innocent look we imagined Danielle to have.

Myself and Jo Peplow-Revell filled the roles of JJ and Aaron with Lewis Montague and Tim Bousfield. We also had another male space so as we wanted to always have a back-up incase we lost another actor so we were able to do this with James Hancock and James Garrod.

In our last filming session, we had to change Tamer Saleh with our original actor for Aaron, Lewis Spaul. This was so we could get everyone together, due to timetables, and finish our filming so we could move on to other pieces of work and spend no more time planning and organising other days.

Here are the pictures of our final cast:

Helen - Jasmine Lee

This is Jasmine. The middle and end picture was the costume we had for her. We have the red shoes, which are connotations of lust and romance and also the red lipstick to back it up. She is wearing a black dress, which connotes secrets and also danger which would lead to more interesting storylines from her character.

Deano - Lewis Spaul

We had to make the decision to swap Tamer with Lewis, as again, timetables clashed and this was the only day we could get our final cast together. We originally wanted Deano to be dressed in tracksuit bottoms and a white polo shirt, but with our time being limit and our decision to change actors quick, there was no costume for him. Although, as the focus isn't on his costume, the clothes he is dressed in still work well. His black coat follows the same connotations of secrecy as his Mother's black dress, and his curly hair connotes his messy personality which we can link to his behaviour in Helen Howe.

Danielle - Jo Peplow-Revell

Danielle's costume is tracksuit bottoms connoting her lack of money for the branded clothes that the other characters wear, but also following the "chav" stereotype. The heart on her t-shirt connotes her flirtatious manner and this can allude to the reason she falls pregnant, and as the heart is surrounded by black, it connotes the mischief she intends to cause with the males in Helen Howe.

Courtney - Hannah Cullen

Courtney is in fashionable clothing and this denotes how she fits in within Helen Howe. She is wearing clothes that are long and warm and this shows the visual contrast between her and her Mother, Helen. The colour green on her jumper connotes how she feels envy towards Danielle, not that she is pregnant, just because of the attention she recieves and her bubbly personality.

Richard - Matthew Bigg

Richard's costume is predominantly black, and this is to connote his hidden personality and the secrecy to his character. He is wearing a cardigan and skinny jeans which are the more commonly known clothes for a male to wear. The purple shirt he is wearing connotes the love Stephanie, his wife, feels for him and how the secrecy to his personality covers it up to the outside world.

JJ, Paul, Nathan and Aaron - Lewis Montague, James Garrod, James Hancock and Tim Bousfield

These are our four 'lads'. The first 3 are all dressed in jeans, jumpers and trainers. These denote style and fashion. They are all in similar costume connoting how they are all typical characters and all of the same personality. The colours for the lads are grey mainly, for the jumpers, and this connotes no real spark of personality. The use of the black for these connote the secrecy within them, especially in Aaron who is entirely in black and this connotes secrecy which would be unravelled through other episodes. Aaron is seen as the "tag along" and this is why is costume differs to the others, to create the illusion he hasn't quite achieved the "cool" look JJ and the others have achieved.

Filming Day 3 22/11/10

Today we had planned to do finish our filming with the Helen Howe local shots and the final shot. However, due to the fog on Friday we had to cancel our filming and therefore had to film these shots today also. We planned to get the cast together at St Ann's pub in Great Leigh's at 1.30pm this is so we knew we would have plenty of time to film before it starts getting dark. The first shot we did today was the pub scene where Helen's shoes are tracked in a low angle close up shot where Helen is then revealed the camera then pans into a point of view shot where she looks at the 'lad's' cheering outside of the pub. We took this shot a few times so that we can choose the best one when it comes to editing. We made sure we asked for permission to film outside the pub before filming and we checked again when we got to the location. The road was not very busy so this made the shot a lot easier to capture and therefore we kept to schedule. We then filmed Helen turning the corner where we used shot reverse shot to get a shot of Helen turning the corner in a long shot of her back to then a long shot of her frontwards walking towards the camera when she had turned the corner. This shot was simple and the continuity is good as shot reverse shot maintained Helen's positioning. After this shot we used Jade and Sophie like we had stated to be the Helen Howe locals who stop what they are doing and watch Helen walk past. These shots both went well and we used the over the shoulder and panning shots that are stated on the storyboard. We then filmed the shot where Stephanie slaps Richard we got 3 points of view on the cameras so we will have a good flowing scene in our trailer when it comes to editing.
Overall this day has been successful as we managed to get all of the necessary cast to Gt Leigh's despite the actor issue and also we filmed a lot of the trailer in detail to prevent mistakes and little errors. We now only have 3 shots left to film which we have agreed to film on a date we have set.

Friday 19 November 2010

Filming Day 2, 19/11/2010

Today we were meant to be filming the scene with the three boys outside the pub and the reaction Helen causes. We were also going the film the parts with Helen walking down the road herself. However, due to the weather conditions being very heavy fog, we were unable to film because the conditions were too different to that of yesterday. We will now have to try and fit in these shots in our whole cast session tomorrow, or reschedule for Tuesday the 23rd of November.

Filming Day 1, 18/11/2010

Yesterday we had our first day of filming in Great Leighs, and for this we had Tamer, Jasmine and Hannah. We were filming the reveal shots at the end of our trailer where Helen's children are seen for the first time. We also filmed the part where Deano realises Danielle is pregnant. Because of conflicts with Jenni's tiemtable, she was unable to take part in our trailer, and so we have replaced her with Jo, because it is a minor part in the trailer and so not much acting is actually required. Jo has similar looks to Jenni, who we casted originally because of the fact she looked right for the part, and so we will get the over all look we want for our trailer. We did have time contraints because of the light, and so had about 40 minutes in which to film these scenes; however, we filmed each part several times and from several different cameras and so I think that we have all the footage we need. We tried to make use of a variety of different shots, including shot reverse shot and a reveal shot, but we were also keeping in mind that in soap operas, the majority of the time they use midshots or two shots, so that characters expressions and reactions can be seen clearly.

Filming Schedule

I have produced a filming schedule showing which cast members are required on what days and at what times. This is good because it shows that we have carefully organised our time and have also left ourselves enough time for editing and any necessary re-filming.

Final Costume

Helen

We could not find anyone who owned a red dress that would fit Jasmine therefore we thought of other relevant colours. A black dress was our second choice, black has connotations to mystery and secrecy which complies with Helen's character as in the trailer the audience do not learn anything about her and have to wait and watch the soap to find out. Jasmine made the dress so it fit well and it was quite short also, which is what we were aiming for to comply with the male gaze theory. However, we didn't want to make the dress too revealing as Jasmine may have felt uncomfortable and we had to take into consideration the weather which would have made her freezing.

The red shoes were the most important element of Helen's costume, we could not find a pair of red shoes in Helen's size to borrow so we bought the shoes from Newlook. We only bought these because they were the main element of costume in our trailer.

Deano

This is Deano's costume, we had difficulty finding costume which was similar to the research costume. This was due to not knowing anyone that owned a tracksuit. This made us then change our decision on Deano's costume because if we didn't know anyone with a tracksuit it must mean that not many people wear them and therefore would not be a costume that the audience can relate to. Instead we used skinny jeans as they are very modern and fashionable, with a black coat and black coat. Although the jeans do not connote his 'Chav' stereotype and confident sleazy character, his shoes and coat do as black has connotations to slyness and hidden secrets.

Courtney

We kept to the colour scheme for Courtney's costume and we borrowed the jumper from a friend. The jumper is relevant as it has white which connotes innocence and green which connotes envy which is outlined in the costume research. We got Hannah to wear her own jeans as long as they were skinny dark denim jeans which she already had so we did not need to borrow or buy them. Also the boots were in the costume research post which Hannah already had so that helped us out.

Stephanie

The costume for Stephanie is similar to the one researched. However, she is wearing a black leather jacket, we had to use this because of the weather and it would have been unfair on the actor to put them in just a dress. The jacket is black connoting secrets therefore it displays her and Richards relationship to be full of secrets. Also it is fashionable and modern so the audience members will be able to relate to this which is important as the Uses and Gratifications theory (Denis McQuail) states. The jacket was borrowed from a friend.

We wanted to stick to using a pink dress but we could not get hold of a pale pink dress but we found a friend who had a hot pink dress. This was even more appropriate as the hot pink makes Stephanie look even more vibrant and girly. These have connotations to her character and career as a beauty therapist.

Richard
Richard's costume was originally a black shirt and black jeans. The shirt was to connote maturity as he is an older character but we could not find a black shirt that was fashionable and modern that we could borrow so we thought of other costume that could have connotations to his older mature character.
We asked the males in our cast what they would wear to a party or to a reasonably formal event they suggested a cardigan or checked shirt. We used their feedback and decided on a black cardigan which was borrowed with a purple polo shirt. The purple connotes his 'womaniser' traits as purple can relate to females. Also the black cardigan and coat make him look more mature and the colour black has connotations to his sleazy, secretive personality.

Danielle

Originally we wanted a pink velor tracksuit but we could not find one that we could borrow and we did not want to spend money and buy one because it would never be used again. Instead we used a group members brothers old clothes which were relevant to her character. For example, the green baggy hoody complies with the 'chav' stereotype and also because it is a large and males they will wonder who it belongs to. Also, the baggy tracksuit trousers are grey which connotes dullness which implies she is sad she doesn't know who the dad is.

However, the t-shirt is from h&m and belongs to a group member this t-shirt is relevant as the bright pink heart complies with her flirtatious attitude.

Aaron, JJ, Maxwell and Paul

We originally wanted JJ and Aaron to wear polo shirts with colours that reflected their personalities. However, we changed this idea as we wanted the boys to look as realistic and believable as possible so instead we told the 4 actors a colour scheme of black, grey, brown and denim, and we told them that we wanted them to wear clothes that thought were appropriate to a 'jack the lad' stereotype. This worked well as they wore clothes that are relevant to them and therefore this would give the best picture of verisimilitude.

Final Costumes

Today in our meetings we discussed and finalised our costume ideas. We tried to do this in accordance with the verilasimilatude used in soap operas so that the costumes represent the type of characters we have. Final shotlist for trailer

This is the updated and final shot list that includes every shot included and used for our trailer.

Initial Shot List for Trailer

I created a shot list for our trailer as a basic guide to aid us during filming. The reason that this is beneficial is because it ensures that we don't miss anything out when we are filming, meaning that we are unlikely to have to go back later and refilm. This is our initial shot list, and will be updated with filming dates when we know when we will be filming.

First draft magazine

Draft Magazine 1 Repaired)

More Justifications:

The Magazine will be called Whodunnit?! and will have its own logo and masthead, the magazine usually accomodates all different soaps however as Helen Howe is a new soap the magazine will have a special Helen Howe edition where the cover is just for Helen Howe storylines and characters. The magazine will have one main image and one main coverline and this will be on the left hand side, the reason for the main cover line being on the left hand side will be because when shops stock magazines they are on the shelf so only the left side is seen. So the left side of the magazine needs to be bold and not too over crowded. We have taken this into consideration as the main cover line will say 'Who's the daddy?' in bold sans serif pink. The pink connotes femeniity and would therefore attract females howver because it says daddy it would attract males as well as they are being related to. Also san serif block letters will be used as that is the common type of text used for headlines.

The images of men will attract females as they will be attractive on the other hand the images of males will attract men also as they may be able to relate to the stereotype displayed in the image. The main image of Danielle biting her lip could connote sexuality and vulnerability this would attract men as she will look attractive and also as part of Laura Mulvey's the male gaze theory as Danielle is simply an object which the storyline is based around and the men are the ones who make the storyline interesting as they could be the father.

The images and coverlines on the magazine cover could also be related to Propp's theory of typical characters in the 1920s. For example we have used the 'villian' as the Richard has clearly caused trouble in Stephanie's 'Paradise' also he looks sleazy and suspicious in his image making him look villianous. Stephanie as the ' princess' as she is threatened by the villian as she has to put up with his sleazy ignorant ways. In addition Dannielle could be seen as a 'false hero' as she appears vulnerable and innocent however she is the character who started all the issues by sleeping with lots of different men.

More Auditions

These are the people who we auditioned that we decided not to use for our characters. As we had already decided who we definitely wanted for our piece.

The auditions and audition poster

We created an audition poster which we put up around the school, advertising what the auditions were for and what school years were able to try out, but we also approached people who we thought fitted the specific characters aesthetically.
We organised a date and time for out auditions and got the auditionees into their pairs. We gave them time to run through the script with their partners first so that could relax more and concentrate more on the acting rather than reading the script. We then filmed each audition and told the actors we would let them know if they got the part as soon as possible.
After filming the auditions we edited the film as a group and each did a voice-over explaining who the auditionees are and what part they are auditioning for. We did a voice-over rather than using text to make it more digitally advanced.

This is our audition poster.

Draft magazine hand drawn

We sat down in a group and discussed how we wanted our magazine cover
to look, from analysing and researching soap magazine covers we had a good knowledge of what stands out and what is a good layout.
We drew a rough copy of how we want our magazine cover to be.

These are the pictures of the draft copy:
The picture on the left is the magazine cover we have a masthead which is Whodunnit?! as the magazine will be only on our soap becuase it is new and unique.
There is a large image for the main cover story which is Danielle and there are images around her of the possible fathers.
We have included the price which is at the top and the barcode which is down the bottom these are both common places for these details on soap magazines.
We have got cover lines down the right hand side as they are not as important as the main storyline but each one is interesting. Two of them are questions the top one being 'Will the fresh start be a good start?' with a picture of the Halls, and the bottom one is 'Trouble in paradise?' with a picture of Stephanie with her arms crossed. The middle cover line is a reveal, it says 'Aaron's secret revealed!' this type of advertising makes the reader want to watch the soap to find out what his secret is. This is a method which is common on soap magazines.

Audition Scripts

For our soap we needed to cast people with appropriate roles, we asked certain people who we thought would match the role for specific characters to audition.
As our trailer will not have much dialogue in it we needed material which we could use in the auditions so we could judge each actor.
I created audition scripts for each main character, the scripts are between 2 characters so the actors will audition in pairs, this will not only be more time efficient but it will put them at ease too.
I based the conversations in the script with language based on the characters background for example Danielle talks in slang to fit her 'pregnant teen' stereotype. The conversations in the script are also based on the storylines hinted at in the trailer as well.

Final Props

As we were only filming a trailer, we found that we didn't use any significant props. A trailer is often kept minimal, with the set and characters established. The most important prop we used was the car:

We wanted it green to connote the envy the female getting out of the car feels towards Helen. We decided to not use the props we were intending to use because of the complexity of getting the specific objects we required and also with problems with our casting, we didn't have enough members to play lots of different people.
When looking at trailers, the set is very minimalistic. For example, the trailer for the return of Eastender's Kat and Alfie is minimalist and doesn't include many props and relies heavily on the set.

All we can see of the set is the pub, which is the focus of Eastenders and features in a lot of trailers.

Props

This is our props list currently. It will be developed if we consider to use anything else that may be of value. This is helping us to arrange what props we need to find/buy with a budget if needed. Following the preparation of filming, I will compose another list of the props we do use and why they are relevent, or not, to our trailer.

Lighting in Soap Operas

As a low budget school production, our soap opera trailer won't have a lot of the same technical qualities as a real soap opera; because of this, we will be using mainly natural lighting and so will need to plan filming schedules during hours of sunlight in order for the trailer to be the best possible quality. Also, we can film inside under artifical lighting, which again, isn't necessarily the way soap operas would normally be filmed but is a way for us to get around lighting problems.

In a soap opera, a "three point lighting" set up is made use of as a cheap but efficent way of lighting the set. The reason this is cheap to do is because the whole set is lit up and lights arent specifically changed for each shot, meaning fewer takes are needed. This means that less time is spent filming because the acors can move freely without havung to adjust lights and therefore less money is spent. In a film, this type of lighting set up wouldn't be used because it can look a far better quality and more natural by training specific lights on people, and films have a much larger budget.

This is an example of a soap opera set, where it is clear that the lights are fixed and do not move to track actors.

This is another photo that shows how the lights are used on a set.

Final Location

The google web definition for location scouting states: Location scouting is a vital process in the pre-production stage of film making and commercial photography (Reference:)

When location scouting we had to visualise how our trailer would be displayed and where we envisioned it to be set. We decided we would like to set it in the suburbs of a town in a modern village. We have chose a modern village because our target audience is Category D audience members and we feel that our audience members should be able to relate with our characters in a realistic setting. We would also like our characters to all be associated with each other as residents of villages often are.

A very generic convention of soap operas, is the local pub that residents all socialise in. We have decided to use a pub as this establishes to the audience the iconic convention that most soaps tend to share. We would like the pub to be the place where characters confide in each other, arguments happen and the whole village congregates. This is very typical of other soap operas, for example: The Queen Vic in Eastenders has seen many fights, wedding receptions and is always packed with locals.

A post office relates to our audience because it adds a sense of realism to our soap opera which is what we are aiming to achieve.

A village hall could be a possible place for the residents to gather together, this could be teenagers hanging around outside or it could be where the older residents take dance classes. This would be a good setting to use as it adds realism and our audience can relate more with going to a village hall than they could if we set our soap opera around posh restaurants and 5 star hotels.

We would like to film our soap opera trailer in a cul de sac, this is because all the residents are neighbours and will all be familiar with eachother. We aim to create storylines which involve multiple characters and their relations with eachother.

The reason we have chosen these locations is because they are all in one area, meaning that all the buildings look similiar. This will aid us during editing because when putting all the shots together it will look more consistant than if we had filmed in many different locations. In all soaps, the houses of the central characters tend to be fairly close together which is also fitting for this area, because the houses look onto each other. The fact that we all live in Great Leighs means that we don't need to gain permission to film outside houses because we can use our own.

Location scouting

Boreham, Chelmsford Essex

Public footpath- could be used for tracking shot, but it will be difficult to get good lighting when filming here.

These are the shops in the village, this is commonly seen in soap operas for example 'The Drive and buy' in Hollyoaks. This is something the audience will be able to relate to making the soap more believable which is what audience members look for in soaps according to Denis McQuail's Uses and Gratifications theory.

St Andrews Road- a road full of houses, gives the environment implying everyone knows eachother making the characters link easily.

Plantation Rd

Allens Close

Recreation Park-

New area, this would make the soap look new and connote that everyone has a fresh start in the soap making the audience want to watch and find out how the characters settle.

Also, the different colour houses could have connotations for different characters. For example, pink could be for the flirty female connoting femininity and blue for the gossiping elders because they are neutral in situations.

The butchers is a local business which are often present in villages also means it is a social place for the older characters in the soap.

The Six Bells pub, the main social meeting point for the Jack-the-lads.

The Recreation Park playground

The bench and swings are often seen in scenes of characters when miserable, this setting could be used in out soap.

Eastenders

Another shot of St Andrews Rd

Almonde Close

This Close has the houses in a square with grass in the middle this setting would make the characters always looking out over eachothers house, invading privacy. This is a main theme for arguments in soap operas.
